Harvey to Houston: Scottish Painting

20 May - 18 June 2011
Overview

This exhibition included work by a number of important names in Scottish Art from the nineteenth and twentieth century; from the genre painter Sir George Harvey to the work of John Houston in the 1970s.  Waller Hugh Paton's atmospheric and monumental painting of the Quiraing on Skye and Sir D Y Cameron's vision of Schiehallion illustrated the Scottish landscape in all its grandeur. Arthur Melville's work from the 1880s in North Africa to a later watercolour of the Rialto, Venice represented the Glasgow Boys as did a vibrant, early watercolour by E A Walton.  Anne Redpath and Gillies brought in the Edinburgh School: Redpath takes us to the South of France in another example of a Scots artist abroad while Gillies takes Temple, his picturesque home village, as his subject.  A major oil by Joan Eardley of two Samson children gave the exhibition an urban slant. Other pictures included were by John Duncan, William Miller Fraser, William Wells, John MacLauchlan Milne and Ian Fleming.
