John Clerk of Eldin 1728-1812

Overview

As well as a successful etcher and engraver, John Clerk of Eldin did considerable work as a merchant, naval author, geologist and landowner.

He likely began drawing and producing prints after he was introduced to the English draughtsman Paul Sandby, who was in Scotland under the Board of Ordnance Survey from 1746 to 1751, and went on to produce over 110 different prints.
