The scene identifies several specific businesses of the era, including Fred Vink & Co / Rope & Sail Makers and Smith & Son / Hermitage Coal Wharf. Whistler captures the receding coastline of the river with a finesse that critics of the time compared to the work of Wenceslaus Hollar. In the far distance, the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral is visible through a haze of smoke from a passing steamboat.Literature
