Robert Colquhoun 1914-1962

Overview

Born in Kilmarnock, Colquhoun studied at Glasgow School of Art where he met Robert MacBryde, his lifelong partner. In 1941 they moved to London where they shared a studio at Bedford Gardens, where Colquhoun moved away from his earlier landscape painting and concentrated on figures which he treated in an abstracted, angular manner.

In 1958 a major retrospective was held of Colquhoun's work at the Whitechapel. His best work is incredibly powerful and tragic, often implying loneliness and desolation.
