Sir Muirhead Bone HRSA HRWS 1876-1953

Overview

Sir Muirhead Bone made his name - and fortune - as a printmaker and draughtsman. Indeed he was one of the finest draughtsmen of his generation. Sir Muirhead was born and educated in Glasgow. He studied at Glasgow School of Art whilst also being apprenticed to an architect. He then studied lithography and etching and moved permanently to London in 1901. He was an official war artist during both World Wars. He was behind the founding, and became a trustee, of The Imperial War Museum; he also served as a trustee to The National Gallery and The Tate Gallery. In addition to collections in these institutions, the work of Sir Muirhead can also be found at The British Museum, the Hunterian, Glasgow and Boston Public Library, Massachusetts, USA. Sir Muirhead Bone was knighted in 1937.
